Summary:

"Territory and Tourism, the Algarve case 1960 – XXI Century" is a technical scientific study in tourism which is developed in Algarve’s NUT II, submitted to the Sub-Program n.º 4, PIQTUR’s Measure 4,1.

The territory assumed on this research mentions the cultural and natural land use in Algarve in 1960 (starting point) and its transformation through that times dynamics by the new dynamics demonstrated since 1960 (with highlight for tourism) and by the interaction of these different origin and nature dynamics.

The tourism component mentions the economic activity which as genesis has the temporary visit and the prolonged or definite stay of non residents (in Portugal or outside) in Algarve and which originate economic activities, social transformations and cultural innovations.

By associating these two dimensions, this project based on the gathering and analysis of normative and scientific information about the detailed evolution of this activity in this particular space (open), pretends to promote the substantiated understanding of the present to better prepare future, giving body to a significant technical-scientific research about:

• The cultural and natural land use of Algarve in 1960;
• The varied forms that tourism development assumed in Algarve;
• Its territorial implementation (in space, society and culture);
• The origin of today’s existing dynamics which condition the future.
