Contractor: Câmara Municipal de Tavira
Execution time limit: 2007

Summary:

The Algarve’s University through the International Centre of Territory and Tourism Research (CIITT), promotes the study of regions on an open and multidisciplinary form, on a scientific approach and contribution to the sustainable development process in different scales and territories.

The Local Agenda 21 for Tavira is a marked territorial process. By the dynamics detected through the available statistics characterization, by the diagnosis and strategies already present in the council’s documents consulted by the CIITT team, by the council’s framework in the new dynamic and regional conditionings present in the strategic reference table for 2007-2013, the Local Agenda 21 for Tavira will start with four priority levels of local intervention:

a) Land Use Planning;
b) Economy and Competitiveness;
c) Tourism and Leisure;
d) Socio-Cultural.

The Local Agenda 21 for Tavira fits in the agreed principles of the "Earth Summit", presented in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, generalized as think global, act local. The City Hall and in this particular case, the Tavira City, by the intervention capacity it has in its area of municipal influence and even outside the municipality, assume a fundamental role assuring the participation and liability of citizens, close to the problems and, therefore, to the solutions.
